If you are an emergency responder or a public official it is important to understand information about transmission pipelines. To receive information on the location of transmission lines in your jurisdiction you can access the National Pipeline Mapping System. This Information is password protected for security purposes. Distribution gas line location can be determined by calling Sunshine State One- Call at 811.

Awareness of hazards and prevention measures undertaken

Natural gas is an odorless, colorless and non-toxic fuel. GRU adds an odorant that smells like rotten eggs to help the public detect a possible gas leak. In addition to this safety feature GRU technicians and field employees are engaged in ensuring the safety of our customers and the public.

  • Annually leak survey all schools, churches and public buildings
  • Currently engaged in a replacement program for older gas lines
  • Entire gas system leak surveyed every five years

Pipeline purpose and reliability

  • Underground gas lines are the safest and most reliable method of fuel delivery available today.
  • Not only a primary source of energy for over 31,000 customers but is used for
  • backup power generation in many hospitals, shelters, and business in the Gainesville area.
  • Constantly monitored because our customers expect reliable service and we work hard to meet these expectations.

Emergency Preparedness Communications and how to get additional information

All GRU employees have been trained in the Incident Command Structure and the lines of communication that must be followed in the event of an incident. We work closely with emergency responders to safely stop the flow of gas in the event of an unplanned release of gas.
