Safety is our highest priority

How can you tell where a pipeline is located?

Pipelines are buried at least 18 inches underground with line markers used to indicate their approximate location along the pipeline path. The markers can be found where a pipeline intersects with a street or highway. However, markers only indicate the approximate pipeline position. Gas line locations can be determined by calling Sunshine 811.

What do I need to know about pipelines?

Gas pipelines carry compressed natural gas, which is highly pressurized. Natural gas is an odorless, colorless and non-toxic fuel. GRU adds an odorant that smells like rotten eggs to help the public detect a possible gas leak. In addition to this safety feature, GRU technicians and field employees are engaged in ensuring the safety of our customers and the public.

How can I help prevent a pipeline emergency?
  • Do not plant trees or shrubs on right-of-ways.
  • Do not dig, build or store anything near the right-of-way.
  • Always call Sunshine 811 before digging to determine gas line locations.
  • Visit the Pipeline 101 website for additional safety tips and pipeline information.
